21October2020 – A beginning on the boards

You can tell you’re dreading the impending grayness of winter when color keeps popping up where it wasn’t expected. We’re also excited to get the opportunity to work with the beautiful textures of this wood siding from Arbre et Bois, charred in the Japanese tradition of shou-sugi-ban.

05May2020 – Love of Beginnings

Sometimes the process starts with a little paint and a lot of mess.  Here’s a sneak peak at some exciting new beginnings on the boards, more to come.

21April2020 – Adaptations for a pandemic

Claire is proud to have worked with Architecture sans frontières Quebec on several emergency interventions to help protect the staff and clientele of vital organizations as they remain open during the crisis.  These adaptations have included a new shower entry enclosure and protective screen in the supervised injection center of CACTUS Montréal, temporary dividers at Projets Autochtones du Quebec, the re-planning and modification of the ladders between beds at the women’s dormitory of Mission Old Brewery’s Patricia Mackenzie Pavilion to allow for more space between participants and better circulation, and consulting at Dans la rue and Maison Benoit Labre.

ASFQ continues to need volunteers.  Portail Constructo highlighted the initiative here:

24Mar2020 – Esquisses magazine

Thank you to Christine Lanthier and the Esquisses team for highlighting December’s conference ‘Architecture et itinérance’ and our project Resilience Montreal, both part of Architecture Without Borders’s urban solidarity program. The efforts of all those working in this domain and the implementation of creative solutions for the vulnerable communities they support are more critical than ever.

06Mar2020 – New project kickoff

What better way to celebrate Women in Construction Week than with the start of a new project with Habitat for Humanity Quebec?  A beautiful beginning

11Dec2019 – Architecture et itinérance

Architecture et itinérance : une rencontre nécessaire pour une ville socialement résiliante et inclusive

Last week’s conference/soirée held by Architecture Without Borders Quebec and Maison du development durable marked the start of what will hopefully be a lasting, evolving, and productive conversation around ways architecture can support the homeless and support the people who support them. The amazing panel of local experts made this an informative and provocative beginning. Thank you to everyone who came out!

22Nov2019 – Montréal solidaire et inclusive

CDA was grateful to take part in the inspiring and generative discussions this week at FORUM Montréal, solidaire et inclusive. A diverse group of people from different sectors and with different stories worked through solutions for cohabiting public space in ways sensitive to vulnerable populations and those experiencing homelessness.

16Nov2019 – Resilience Montreal – Grand Opening!

After the hard work of an army of tireless volunteers and the support of numerous organizations, the indigenous communities, and public officials including Mayor Valérie Plante, the inauguration of Resilience Montreal was emotional and extraordinary. We are beyond grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Architecture Without Borders Quebec and the Resilience Montreal team on this new model of wellness center for those experiencing homelessness near Cabot Square.

04Nov2019 – Resilience Montreal, Update and Call to Action

It takes a community.  The amazing volunteer and ASFQ team made great progress at the first Resilience Montreal barnraising weekend. We still need you Montreal!  Let us know if you want to join in.

13Oct2019 – Resilience Montreal

CDA is excited to announce a new project with Architecture Sans Frontières Québec. The first stage of “Résilience Montréal” will be the development of a center to address the needs of people experiencing homelessness, particularly those of Native origin, who frequent Cabot Square and who have been left without access to services. The project is jointly sponsored by the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal / Foyer Pour Femmes, Nazareth Community, and the Arrondissement de Ville-Marie and will transform the space of the former Miso Sushi. We had a great kickoff meeting with these amazing partners. Check back for progress. For more background, see the recent articles below:

The project is part of ASFQ’s larger initiative to study and test ways in which architecture can effectively address homelessness. This includes mapping the current ecosystem and stakeholders in Montreal, finding meaningful opportunities to be of service, examining precedent interventions in terms of temporality, formality, and level of user participation, and developing a database of international best practices.

01Oct2019 – March for the climate

CDA was proud to join the hundreds of thousands who gathered in Montreal for the historic march for the climate. Big thank you to the amazing songwriter and poet Robin Gorn for leading our voices.

20Sept2019 – Coming Soon! Don’t break a nail.

We have something exciting in the works. Stay tuned for the launch of a new digital initiative in support of women in the design and construction industry. This will be a space in which to share successes, setbacks, horror stories, strategies for navigating a field that refuses to transform as radically, systemically, and quickly as needed, and for hosting conversations about how to effect change and hold leaders accountable through policy, organizing, and speaking our minds.
